DUTCHESS COUNTY
FAIR BOOK

Ahearn’s book, The Dutchess County Fair: Portrait of an American Tradition, features more than 50 of my photographs from the fair as well as an historical account of its 160+ years.

Dutchess County Fair

For thirteen summers now, I have walked the pathways at the fair and delighted in many profound and humorous scenes—the serenity of a shepherdess resting with her head on her goat’s belly as she passes the hot hours between competitions; the power of a jet-black, six-horse harness team racing along the track’s white picket fence; the humor of a row of shooters’ derrières as they squirt clowns for prizes; the pit in your stomach that forms when you see the silhouette of The Claw against the summer sky; the pride of a 4-H boy tenderly holding the sheep he spent 8 months raising. These are some of the captured moments in this collection.

Over 500,000 people attend the Dutchess County Fair every August to experience the 4-H animals, the Midway rides, the entertainment and the food. While the fair is a defining county event, its experience is a national phenomenon. People look forward to  thrilling rides and 4-H shows at state and county fairs across the country. Going to the fair is as American as apple pie, really.
