The only thing crazier than climbing on the back of a 2,000-pound bull is hopping in the ring to photograph someone riding one. “The viewfinder won’t protect you from a charge,” Molly Ahearn laughs. “I had to leap onto the fence to avoid getting gored several times. I still can’t believe promoters lt me do it.”
Ahearn’s cowgirl images are for sale at the Millbrook Winery from September 1 through November 10 with an opening reception Saturday, September 13, from 4:30 to 6:30 pm.
In the early 90s Ahearn followed the women’s rodeo circuit in the west. By day, she developed and hung film to dry in her pop-up camper. By night, she and her husband went to the rodeo. “It takes a lot of mental preparation to convince yourself that you can ride till the six-second buzzer sounds. I have nothing but admiration for these women,” says Ahearn.
This exhibit is part of the Art in the Loft series sponsored by the Dutchess County Arts Council, dedicated to promoting the work and talent of its member artists. The Millbrook Winery is located at 26 Wing Road in Millbrook, NY.
Bright colors, swirling figures, and vibrant energy characterize Jose Acosta’s paintings. “There is a strong influence of my native Cuba in the happiness and bright colors my paintings,” he says. Acosta was born in Cuba and immigrated to the U.S. with his family when he was 3 years old. “Generally my paintings depict my personal history and my surroundings. I paint from my heart, expressing a little hope and happiness in all of my creations.” |
